Hello Everyone!
Today, I read a two statistics that caused me great concern. As a former high school dropout, I know of the freedom that comes with the ability to read, and read well. The day that I decided to return to school, I knew that my life would never be the same. The memory of my children sitting in the audience watching me receive my high school diploma still makes me cry. Some years later, they were in the audience watching me receive my Bachelor's. Next year they will be in the audience as I receive my Master's. Maybe some day, they will be in the audience as I receive my Doctorate.
I share this, because I want everyone to know that it only takes one decision. We live in a country of opportunities, but we must go after them. Yes, there will be challenges along the way, but that which does not kill us makes us stronger! (Nietzsche). Look at me quoting Nietzsche! Wow! The power of reading is limitless!
Seventy-five percent of state prison inmates did not complete high school or can be classified as low literate. Ninety-five percent of those incarcerated are reintegrated into our communities. Research shows that inmates who are educated are 43 percent less likely to return to prison. ( National Bureau of Economic Research, 2017).
Children of parents with low literacy skills have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves.1 These children are more likely to get poor grades, display behavioral problems, have high absentee rates, repeat school years, or drop out. (ProLiteracy:, 2018).
